Shakespear's most renowned play of all time will be his "Romeo and juliet" this play is known by nearly everyone, thought not everyone knows the same version. Sad fact is though that shakespear did not come up with this himself, He copied the main idea of a long poem written by a Arthur Brooke. Arthur's poem " The tragical tale of Romeus and Juliet" and published it in 1562, then retold by William Painter as "palace of pleasure" in 1582.
Shakespear read the poem Brooke published and made his own play of it but quite frankly Arthur based his poem on an italien tale, you wonder what would happen if copyright laws excisted back then.
The story romeo and juliet has been retold many times and in many different ways and featured in many different ways to. Some of the most mentionable by todays TV standards would be, even though there are so MANY more:

Romeo and Juliet (1996)
Leonardo di Caprio   Romeo; Claire Danes ...Juliet; Directed by...Baz Luhrmann
This modern version of Romeo and Juliet is probably the most entertaining of the three versions, but it is also the farthest away from Shakespeare’s play instead of in Verona, this movie is set on Verona Beach. This movie is also set in the modern day, there are no swords or horses but guns and cars.

Romeo and Juliet (1968)
Leonard Whiting...Romeo; Olivia Hussey ... Julia; Directed by   Franco Zeffirelli
This film presents Romeo and Juliet the way Shakespeare does but it does leave out a few scenes. For example, it never explains how Friar John was quarantined, never shows the apothecary, and Paris was never at the tomb. This film was very entertaining, and Olivia Hussey did a Wonderful job of playing Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet (1954)

Laurence Harvey...Romeo; Susan Shental   Juliet; Directed by   Renato Castellani
Though this film wasn’t as the other two versions, it was definitely the closest to the structure of the play. It seemed that all of the lines came from the play and the only scene that was incorrect was that Romeo.

Some other stories going along the same lines as Romeo and juliet with the same themes or similar themes would be:

Cleaopatra and Mark Antony
Allot like romeo and juliet except for the fact that it actully happened, just as tragic and sad just no happy ending where the two sides join together.

Tristan and Isolde
Again dealing with feuding side's, deceit, tragic, love and sex.

Pocahontas and John Smith
This story and old american calssic dealt with love, deciet and tragidy. It is a nice story but very depresing and there was allot more bloodshed then in the other's.

Not my actual reviewes just found on the interwebs, not my words just copied. Using it as a quote sorta thing, so dont freak out.

This photo is from the 1996 remake of the romeo and juliet take.

Im a hundred percent sure that love stories full of tragedy and thing's like the above stories still happen every day and its not unlikely that allot of the stories are actully better then the ones shown here ! But it all depend's on your perspective for example instead of feuding family's you can have two fighting friend circles, two competing sport team's, hell you will find love in the most weird of places aslong as you look.

This tale of Romeo and Juliet is still  relevant today because it deals with allot of subjects that dont just stop being dealt with and wont be stopped dealing with for a very long time, Tragedy, love, lies, violence and sex will hopefully never be stopped dealing with so technically romeo and juliet will stay relevant for very very long.

Romeo and Juliet!
